Granny Joan’s chocolate pudding

This recipe is very close to my heart and not just because I love chocolate, but also as it is my Granny’s. I never had the opportunity to meet her, but knowing we’ve both shared a passion and love for food and cooking means a lot to me. This pudding is absolutely delicious as it’s soft and gooey on the inside and not overly sweet – it literally melts in ones mouth! Cream or vanilla ice-cream is the perfect accompaniment. It is a great dessert for a dinner party or treat for the family.

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tbl cocoa
  • 3 tsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence

  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 4 tbl cocoa
  • 1 cup water

Serves 6

Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

Sift the sugar, flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa into a medium bowl. Melt and add the butter. Add the milk and vanilla and mix lightly – not too well.

Ladle the mixture into a greased pudding or pyrex bowl.

Now pour over the brown sugar, cocoa and water in the given order and don’t mix.

Put immediately into oven and bake for about 40 – 45 minutes.

Let the pudding stand for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve with vanilla ice-cream or cream and enjoy!

I just had to include the original handwritten recipe…
